Yacht and Boat Diagnostics

Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of an effective marine repair. We inspect the vessel to identify visible damage, abnormal operation, leaks, corrosion, wear, and performance issues.

Depending on the project, our inspection may include engine starting and operating behavior, unusual vibrations, noises, smoke or overheating, fuel consumption and loss of power, battery condition, charging performance, electrical connections, fuses, distribution panels, bilge pumps, water detection, steering response, propeller, shaft, rudder and drive components, hull condition, deck hardware, hatches, windows, seals, navigation, communication, and safety equipment.

A detailed inspection helps prevent unnecessary part replacement and allows us to identify related issues before they become more expensive.

Marine Engine Repair and Servicing

The engine is one of the most important systems on any motor yacht or boat. A well-maintained engine provides dependable propulsion, predictable fuel consumption, and greater confidence during coastal or offshore travel.

Our engine maintenance services may include engine oil and filter replacement, fuel filter and water separator service, inspection of belts, hoses, clamps and connections, cooling system inspection, exhaust system checks, battery and starter testing, diagnostic testing for irregular performance, fuel line inspection, drive belt and pulley checks, transmission and gearbox checks, and preparation for seasonal launch or storage.

If your engine is difficult to start, loses power, overheats, produces unusual smoke, consumes more fuel than usual, or operates with excessive vibration, early inspection is strongly recommended. Ignoring these signs can turn a manageable repair into a major mechanical problem.

Outboard Motor Service

Outboard engines are exposed to water, salt, impact, vibration, and changing weather conditions. Their reliability depends on regular inspection and correct seasonal care.

Wake Workshop can assist with outboard motor checks, servicing, and repair. We inspect the propeller, gearcase, mounting points, controls, cooling passages, fuel system, electrical connections, and sacrificial anodes. We also check for signs of corrosion, impact damage, water contamination, and abnormal movement.

A damaged propeller may reduce performance and place additional strain on the engine. Corrosion around electrical connections can cause intermittent faults. A restricted cooling passage can lead to overheating. Regular outboard maintenance helps protect the motor and keeps the boat responsive and efficient.

Inboard Engine and Transmission Maintenance

Inboard propulsion systems require careful attention to the engine compartment, cooling circuit, exhaust, transmission, shaft line, mounts, and ventilation. We examine the complete system rather than treating the engine as an isolated component.

Our work may include engine servicing, inspection of the gearbox, checking shaft alignment, examining flexible couplings, reviewing engine mounts, and identifying signs of oil or coolant leakage. We also inspect hoses and clamps in areas that may be difficult for the owner to access during normal use.

A well-maintained transmission and shaft system can help reduce vibration, protect the engine, and improve power transfer to the propeller.

Fiberglass and Composite Hull Repair

Fiberglass boats can suffer from cracks, punctures, impact marks, delamination, gelcoat damage, and structural weakness. Some damage is cosmetic, while other defects may affect the strength or watertight integrity of the hull.

We provide fiberglass and composite repair for selected areas of hulls, decks, consoles, lockers, steps, transoms, and other components. The repair process may involve removing damaged material, preparing the surface, rebuilding the structure, laminating new composite layers, fairing the repaired area, and preparing it for gelcoat or paint.

It is important to address cracks and water ingress early. A small damaged area may become more difficult to repair if moisture enters the laminate or if repeated movement causes the defect to spread.

Hull Inspection and Underwater Maintenance

The underwater part of the vessel affects speed, fuel consumption, maneuverability, and structural protection. We assist with hull inspections, surface preparation, cleaning, and maintenance planning.

The inspection may identify scratches, dents, impact damage, blisters or signs of osmosis, flaking or failed antifouling, corrosion around metal fittings, damaged anodes, propeller or rudder problems, water ingress around through-hull fittings, and issues with seacocks and underwater valves.

A clean and properly protected hull helps the vessel move efficiently through the water. It also supports the performance of the propeller, reduces resistance, and protects the surface from marine growth.

Antifouling Preparation and Application Support

Antifouling maintenance is an important part of boat ownership, particularly for vessels that remain in the water for extended periods. Before applying a new protective coating, the existing surface must be evaluated and properly prepared.

Our service may include surface cleaning, removal of loose or failed material, sanding, masking, priming of selected areas, and preparation for antifouling application. We also inspect the hull for related issues that may be hidden beneath old coatings.

The correct preparation method depends on the condition of the existing coating, the hull material, the vessel’s use, and the type of product selected.

Gelcoat Repair, Painting, and Polishing

Sunlight, saltwater, dock contact, dirt, and general use gradually affect the exterior appearance of a yacht or boat. Faded gelcoat, light scratches, oxidation, stains, and small chips can make a well-maintained vessel look neglected.

Wake Workshop provides cosmetic restoration services designed to improve the appearance and protect exposed surfaces. Depending on the condition of the vessel, we may carry out cleaning and decontamination, oxidation removal, gelcoat spot repair, surface sanding and fairing, polishing and machine compounding, protective wax or surface treatment, localized painting, and preparation of larger areas for refinishing.

Proper surface preparation is essential. Polishing a contaminated or badly damaged surface without preparation may provide only a temporary improvement. We select the appropriate process according to the material and the level of deterioration.

Marine Electrical Repair

Marine electrical systems operate in a demanding environment. Moisture, salt, vibration, heat, poor connections, and overloaded circuits can create recurring electrical problems.

We inspect and troubleshoot electrical systems associated with batteries and battery switches, shore power connections, battery chargers and inverters, navigation lights, interior and exterior lighting, bilge pumps, refrigeration and climate-control equipment, navigation instruments, communication equipment, distribution boards and fuses, electric toilets, and freshwater pumps.

We look for loose terminals, damaged insulation, corrosion, incorrect connections, overloaded circuits, and inadequate protection. When repairs are completed, the affected system is tested to confirm stable operation.

Navigation and Marine Electronics Installation

Modern boats often depend on chartplotters, GPS systems, depth sounders, radar, autopilots, VHF radios, AIS equipment, cameras, and digital monitoring systems.

Wake Workshop can assist with the installation, replacement, configuration, and troubleshooting of selected marine electronics. We consider the position of the display, access to controls, cable routing, protection from moisture, power supply, and compatibility with existing equipment.

A clean installation should be safe, practical, and easy to use. Cables must be secured, connectors protected, and equipment positioned so the skipper can operate it without distraction.

Steering, Hydraulic, and Mechanical Systems

Reliable steering is essential for safe maneuvering in marinas, coastal waters, and open water. Difficulty turning the wheel, excessive play, delayed response, unusual noises, or hydraulic fluid loss should be inspected promptly.

We help diagnose and repair selected steering and control components, including cables, hydraulic lines, pumps, cylinders, fittings, and mechanical connections. We also inspect rudders, linkages, brackets, and related hardware where accessible.

A complete check helps determine whether the issue comes from the steering system itself, the drive, the rudder, the propeller, or a combination of components.

Plumbing, Pumps, and Bilge Systems

Water management is critical on any vessel. Bilge pumps, freshwater systems, holding tanks, seacocks, hoses, and drains require regular checks to prevent leaks and unpleasant failures.

We inspect pumps, hoses, clamps, valves, filters, and accessible connections. We can assist with replacement of worn hoses, faulty pumps, damaged fittings, and selected plumbing components.

Bilge pump testing is particularly important. A pump that does not activate correctly, has a blocked intake, or relies on a weak electrical connection may fail when it is needed most.

Seasonal Boat Preparation

Before launching a boat after winter storage, many systems should be inspected. Wake Workshop can help prepare your yacht or boat for the boating season.

Seasonal preparation may include engine and transmission checks, battery testing and charging, cooling and fuel system inspection, bilge pump testing, steering and control checks, navigation light inspection, hull and deck review, safety equipment overview, leak and seal inspection, cleaning, polishing, and surface preparation.

A planned pre-season inspection gives owners time to correct problems before holidays, charter bookings, or important trips.

Winterization and Long-Term Storage Preparation

Correct winterization helps protect the vessel during periods of inactivity. Depending on the climate, storage location, and engine type, the process may include preparing the cooling system, changing fluids, protecting fuel components, checking batteries, cleaning the hull, ventilating interior areas, and covering sensitive equipment.

We can help create a storage checklist for the vessel and identify areas that require special attention. Good preparation can reduce corrosion, moisture damage, frozen components, unpleasant odors, battery failure, and spring commissioning delays.

Yacht Refit and Upgrade Projects

Some owners want to improve an older vessel rather than replace it. A refit may include technical upgrades, cosmetic improvements, new navigation equipment, electrical modernization, interior restoration, or improvements to comfort and storage.

Wake Workshop can help plan selected refit tasks and coordinate the work required to improve usability, reliability, and appearance. We focus on practical upgrades that match the vessel’s purpose and the owner’s priorities.
